Regional Planning Priorities Relevant to INTERREG IIIB: Yorkshire and the Humber

Sustainable Development
Applying sustainable development principles set out in RPG and the Regional Sustainable Development Framework through practical and realistic methods of intervention and assessment (including sustainability appraisals and strategic environmental assessment) to achieve urban and rural renaissance, minimise the need to travel, promote social inclusion and encourage the wise use of non-renewable resources.

Polycentric Development
Achieving more sustainable, polycentric strategic patterns of development in the region in the long term, for example by spreading the benefits of the Leeds economy to other parts of the region.

Economic Development Based on Environmental Assets
Finding ways to integrate the value of the environment (high and low grade) into the successful regeneration of South Yorkshire and the Coalfields, particularly the Dearne Valley Development Zone, Objective 1 strategic economic zones, urban centres and market towns.

Town and City Centres
Revitalising the town and city centres in the region so that they meet the needs of communities and businesses, recognising the role of different centres including market and coalfield towns.

Management of the Coast and Estuary
Achieving a co-ordinated and strategic approach to the management of the East Coast and Humber Estuary to achieve sustainable development and regeneration in the context of climate change, environmental protection and development of the Humber Trade Zone.

Flood Risk
Minimising the threat of flood risk in different parts of the region in the light of climate change through innovative approaches to development and the sharing of best practice.

Transport
*Innovative and practical measures to increase the use of rail for freight
*Measures to promote intermodality
*Promotion of inland water for niche markets *Understanding the evolving role of regional airports in the regional economy *Linking the region to trade routes in the EU and accession states *Development of accessibility standards for development *Improving public transport in rural and coalfield areas through integrated transport assessments and innovative approaches to delivery

Previously-developed land
Promoting the maximum re-use of previously-developed land and understanding the barriers to its development

Tourism
Encouraging urban and rural tourism economy through protecting and improving attractions and accommodation in a way that focuses on targeted visitor markets, maximises economic returns, works with the existing physical and cultural assets and introduces management measures.

Knowledge and ICT Infrastructure
Improving the accessibility of remote areas, particularly rural and coastal parts of the region, through non-conventional transport and use of Information Communications Technology.
